Digital Devices Can Help Kids Read and Give New Interesting Content:

• iPod or iPad devices use the Apple Applications such as Dictionaries, read along moving stories, educational flash cards with sound, and other educational games.
• Leapfrog Leap Pads are books with a digital pen that lets kids point to letters, words, sentences, illustrations that lets them fully explore the text with it being read to them at their command.
• Franklin electronic speaking dictionaries let kids type in how they think a word is spelled and find the actual word from a list of suggested spellings. This device speaks the word and definition to the student. Many other features on this little hand-held device include literary games, rhyming words, spelling lists that can be customized, etc.
• Digital recorders that can be used for students to record their own reading, listen to it to evaluate themselves, share with the teacher or other classmates, compare to other readings of the same text, or listen to a model example of someone else reading the same text.
• Promethean Boards that are connected to computers that have Internet access can be very useful. They can involve the whole class in the use of on-line resources, shared story experiences, author websites, etc. Flip charts can also be used to involve the students in a particular learning objective as well.
• Projectors like the ELMO are great for sharing a story with a large group so the whole group can see the pages while it's being read.
• Classroom Computers can be used for students to research topics, read stories on-line, take AR tests, practice writing about texts they have read, etc.
